The Gift of Peace; John 20:19-29

The Gift of Peace John 20:19-29, Remsen Bible Fellowship, 07-19-2020 Audio Link Introduction Can you think of the time in life when you were most afraid? I can think of several instances when I was very nervous about how a conversation or a phone call would go. Or there are those times of fearing physical peril, which for me have been mercifully brief-like wondering if my car is going to slide off the road into the ditch on one side or the lake on the other.  Take whatever pit-of-the stomach fear you remember, and add to that a heaping helping of confusion, and that’s where the disciples are in our text this morning. Remember that Mary had gone and told Peter and John about the empty tomb, which they then verified. Mary then meets Jesus in the garden. We know from Matthew 28 and Luke 24 that Jesus then meets with the other women who had come to the tomb, and then he meets Peter (a meeting which is recorded as having happened, never detailed for us), and then with two men walking on

Sermon: Jesus and His Church, Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus and His Church Matthew 16:13-20 Remsen Bible Fellowship, 08/18/2019 The 20th century pastor and writer, John Stott, made this statement: “Christ is the center of Christianity, all else is circumference.” It seems obvious. That Christianity is, fundamentally, about Christ. It’s about Jesus. And yet, when people think of Christianity, is it not the case that they often think of something else? Of medieval crusades, or giant churches, or sex scandals, or broken promises, or Westboro Baptist-style bigotry.   And while it is true that we live in a time when the public square is increasingly hostile to Christianity, it is often unfair to point the finger for misapprehensions concerning the church at the media, secularism, the sexual revolution, or some other outside force. The problem is often the church. Too often, the church doesn’t understand itself, and the church fails to understand itself because it first fails to understand who Jesus, and what he means to do with his

Love Your Enemies

Audio Link Sermon starts at 8:30 Love Your Enemies 1 Samuel 24, Remsen Bible Fellowship, 03/28/2021 Introduction You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. These are the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:43-48. Do you find them uncomfortable? I do. Jesus doesn’t say tolerate your enemies, hate your enemies, be understanding of your enemies, or fight your enemies. Jesus says: love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you.
